Plastic waste doesn't simply disappear when we throw it away.

Sometimes, it travels.

After days of heavy rain and typhoons, waste that has been left behind in communities and waterways can eventually make its way toward our coastlines. On September 4, 2026, The Plastic Flamingo and CMA CGM came together at LPPWP for a coastal cleanup, and what we saw was a powerful reminder of the waste management challenge we continue to face.

A Coastline Filled With Waste

Walking along the area, we encountered a wide variety of discarded materials, plastic bottles, sachets, packaging, containers, and other forms of waste.

The sheer volume was difficult to take in.

What was particularly striking was realizing that these materials had not simply appeared overnight. Waste can move through different parts of our environment, carried by rain, flooding, and waterways until it eventually accumulates somewhere else.

Tons of mixed waste were present in the area we encountered, highlighting the scale of the challenge.

And behind every piece of waste is a larger question:

Where did it come from, and how did it get here?

What We Leave Behind Doesn't Disappear

A plastic bottle thrown away in one place may not stay there.

A sachet left on the street can be carried into a drainage system.

Waste that enters a creek can eventually move into a river, and from there, reach our coastal areas.

Heavy rainfall and typhoons can make this movement even more visible.

This is why coastal pollution cannot be addressed only by cleaning beaches and shorelines.

Cleanups are important. They remove waste from the environment and help us see the problem firsthand.

But they also remind us that we need to look further upstream.

We need better waste collection.

We need better waste recovery.

We need more effective recycling.

And we need to support the people and organizations already working every day to keep materials out of our environment.

Turning Action Into Change

For The Plastic Flamingo, this cleanup is part of a bigger commitment.

Our goal is not simply to remove plastic waste from the environment. We want to help ensure that recovered plastic has a pathway back into productive use through recycling.

That means looking at waste differently, not simply as something to be thrown away, but as a material that can potentially be recovered, processed, and given another purpose.

This is where collaboration becomes important.

Through our partnership with CMA CGM, we were able to bring people together to take action on the ground and raise awareness about the importance of responsible waste management.

We are grateful to CMA CGM for the continued support, trust, and partnership we have built over the years.

Partnerships like this demonstrate that environmental action does not have to come from one organization alone.

Businesses, communities, waste workers, recyclers, local organizations, and individuals all have a role to play.

The Cleanup Is Only the Beginning

A cleanup can remove thousands of pieces of waste from a coastline.

But the long-term goal should be to prevent that waste from reaching the coastline in the first place.

That means changing how we manage waste from the moment it is discarded.

It means supporting waste pickers and collectors.

It means strengthening recovery and recycling systems.

It means choosing solutions that keep materials in circulation instead of allowing them to become environmental pollution.

Most importantly, it means recognizing that what we leave behind can eventually find its way back to us.

The coastline is showing us the consequences.

Now, we have to decide what we do about it.

Let's change how we manage our waste.
Let's support the people working to recover it.
And let's work together toward a future where less waste reaches our waterways and coastlines.
