The Plaf supports the Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, the United Nations (UN) adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which would replace the Millennium Development Goals that stood from 2000 to 2015.

These goals aim to call to action all countries in a global partnership to fight poverty, inequality and injustice and tackle climate change by 2030. Thus, encouraging businesses and companies to integrate them in their strategies.

The range of the challenges stated by the SDGs impacts all companies in at least one of their spectra of activity, whether it is investments, business model or practices.

 Here are the 17 goals:

 WHY IS IT IMPORTANT

Even if the primary target is at Governmental level, the SDGs recognize the importance and influence businesses can have on achieving them. In fact, company activities can have an impact on the way and level of living of habitants & workers, economy, on the environment etc.

Inclusion and implementation of such goals can go a long way.

That is why, we, at The Plastic Flamingo are contributing to the following 7 SDGs in our advocacy and business model:

  • SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower women

  • SDG 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

  • SDG 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries

  • SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

  • SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

  • SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

  • SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

We address these SDGs through 5 major axes:

  • Promote and support gender equality,

  • Promote decent work for all and reduce inequalities,

  • Promote circular economy in developing cities,

  • Develop climate resilience of the most affected countries,

  • Tackle marine plastic pollution.

These goals require businesses to take concrete actions so, here is how The Plaf is implementing them:

SDG 5 & The Plaf: Achieve gender equality and empower women

SDG’s target related:

  •  5.1 End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.

With these in mind, The Plaf commits to:

  •  Promote and implement involvement and participation of women in the company. In fact, our target is to have 70% of women in our workforce.

  • Do social work and enable women who wish to work when their husband prevents them to do so.

  • Promote equal pay and responsibilities between genders.

  • Give better standard of work for the waste management profession: reliable contracts, fair remuneration, social rights, access to basic financial services.

  • Provide safety in the workplace.

SDG 11,12 and 13 & The Plaf: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns and Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

  • 12.5 By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.

With these goals and objectives that are now anchored in our vision and business model The Plastic Flamingo hopes to add one steppingstone to the edifice, to the battle against inequality, pollution, poverty and injustice.
